POLEC - Joseph Walter

On March 12, 2015, Joseph Walter Polec passed peacefully into the light of God. He was 97 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Polec was raised in Poland, returning to this country at the age of 19 to begin a new life. He served in the US Army as a Corporal in the Pacific during World War II, and was awarded two Bronze Stars. After the war, he settled in the Black Rock section of Buffalo, where he raised his family and worked as a spot welder and machinist at various companies.

He was a self-taught violinist and member of the Assumption Church choir, as well as serving as an usher for many years. His passion was gardening, as evidenced by the bounty of flowers and fresh vegetables that always graced his yard and table. Family, friends and community members were always grateful for the harvest surplus of apples, pears, tomatoes, and cucumbers he shared with them, as well as his outstanding home made dill pickles. Everyone’s favorite was the red wine he made from grapes growing in his backyard.

He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and an active member of the Polish Cadets for many years, helping run the weekly bingo nights, organizing pinochle tournaments and volunteering wherever he was needed. His infectious laugh will live on in the hearts and memories of the many lives he touched.
